Crawford & Co’s Asia-Pacific earnings down

Loss adjuster Crawford & Co has reported a 16% increase in profit to $US40.15 million ($42.19 million) for the nine months to September 30.

However, operating earnings from territories outside the US fell significantly as it finalised claims management from the 2011 Thai floods.

The Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa (AP-EMEA) division reported operating earnings of $US19.49 million ($20.48 million), down 36% on the corresponding period last year. The company notes its business depends on case volumes.

CEO Jeffrey Bowman says the decline from AP-EMEA and legal settlement administration was anticipated as the company winds down two special projects in those operations.

“The Americas segment saw the benefit of activity from an increase in weather-related claims in our Canadian market during the… third quarter,” he said.

Operating earnings from the Americas grew 134% to $US17.36 million ($18.24 million), while earnings from legal settlement admin fell 8% to $US38.71 million ($40.67 million).
