Claims flow in after UK floods

British insurers expect to part with at least £100 million ($181 million) after floods in parts of England and Scotland, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Earlier this month record rainfall sent floodwaters surging through homes and businesses in Cumbria, England and southern Scotland, with Britain’s Met Office reporting 31.4 centimetres within 24 hours.

An initial ABI estimate puts the cost of claims at £100 million ($181 million) but says they could rise further as complex claims such as business interruption are finalised.

“Properties will take a long time to dry out fully and it could be many months before houses and businesses are restored to the condition they were in before the flooding,” ABI Director of General Insurance Nick Starling said.
