Californian bushfires set new records

Bushfires raging in California have been described as some of the biggest in the state’s history.

The Station fire in Los Angeles County grew to more than 635 square km yesterday and is only 51% contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Smaller fires are also yet to be fully contained in San Bernadino and Mariposa counties.

According to the Los Angeles Times, some 5000 homes are still under threat and 76 have been destroyed in the fires.

Residents are yet to be evacuated but 50 sheriff’s deputies have been deployed to communities in case an evacuation is needed.

Two firefighters were killed battling the Station fire on August 30, while nine have been injured.
