BIBA launches consultation, calls for ‘gold standard’

The British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) has launched its member consultation on improvements to industry standards.

CEO Steve White told the annual conference in Manchester last week his vision is to “promote a level of raised standards in our membership that puts us on a footing equal with other professional advisers”.

BIBA says its strategic review has identified “a groundswell of support” for exploring its role in raising standards.

Executive Director Graeme Trudgill says the consultation “will look to establish members’ views and consider the various pathways”.

The consultation paper is available on the BIBA website for three months.

In his inaugural address at the conference, association Chairman Lord Hunt called on brokers to put customers at the heart of their business.

He says in uncertain times there is an urgent need for expert and trusted advice, and brokers should be “setting the gold standard”.

Mr White called on members not to turn away customers if they cannot insure them.

He wants “total signposting”, with agreements similar to those that ensure older holidaymakers and motorists are pointed towards other insurance solutions.

“Let’s not simply turn away consumers if we cannot insure them – let’s point them in the direction of someone who can help,” he said. “Why wouldn’t you do this?”
