BIBA calls for action on flood, motor cover

UK brokers want more funding for flood defences, changes to riot laws that give businesses more time to make claims and more action on fraudulent motor claims, the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) says in its manifesto for this year.

The document lists 20 calls for action and 11 BIBA commitments based around suitable insurance solutions for customers and creating a climate for enterprise.

BIBA wants car-manufacturers to let people access vehicle computer data. It is also urging greater classroom education for young drivers and insurance premium tax relief on telematics products.

It calls for regulation from UK and European agencies to be introduced in a “proportionate and sensible” manner.

BIBA commits to work with insurers, consumer groups and government to improve access to insurance for the “sharing economy” – the growing sector of people sharing their homes and cars.

It calls on the UK Government to fill the £500 million ($974.53 million) gap between current spending on flood defences and what is needed.

The manifesto says the growing cost of regulation remains a challenge for members and makes the UK uncompetitive with Europe.

Regulation takes 0.98% of broker income in the UK, compared with 0.02% in Australia, 0.12% in Bermuda and 0.49% in Singapore.
