Bank warns Pacific islands of climate change threat

Economic losses from climate change could cost developing Pacific nations 2.9-12.7% of gross domestic product by 2100, according to a study by the Asian Development Bank.

The report, which models the impact on crops, tourism, fisheries and health, recommends action be incorporated in development planning.

It calls for disaster risk management to be better aligned with climate change risk.

The bank says Pacific islands’ physical, social and economic characteristics make them vulnerable to storm surges, cyclones and rising sea levels.

Climate change threatens efforts to reduce poverty, it warns.
