Aviva relaunches UK car fleet telematics

Aviva has relaunched its fleet telematics products in the UK, allowing companies to use their existing in-car technology and avoid having to invest in additional equipment.

The new pay-how-you-drive policies will be available on its Fleetwise and Fleetwise Self-Drive Hire products, for fleets where at least half of the vehicles have telematics technology – black boxes which can monitor how and where a car is driven – installed.

Aviva first launched a fleet telematics product in 2004, but an industry source told insuranceNEWS.com.au that in recent years the insurer did not actively promote the product “due to their model not being quite right”.

Aviva Commercial Products Development Manager Mark Keavney says businesses have invested more heavily in vehicle telematics in recent years, “and our approach enables customers who already have the technology installed to maximise the insurance benefits when buying cover for their fleet”.

The source says that over the past five years more than 70% of UK fleet vehicles have been fitted with telematics technology to help fleet managers increase productivity and meet duty-of-care legislation.

In order to qualify for the policy, existing telematics units must meet a number of criteria, including notification when a vehicle exceeds 70mph, the ability to record abnormal acceleration, braking and cornering, as well as the duration and distance of each journey and the ability to identify both the vehicle and the driver.

A team of 12 fleet risk advisers will work with customers to help them monitor their own data and make changes to their driving as appropriate.
