AIR Worldwide improves Europe, UK models

Catastrophe risk modeller AIR Worldwide has expanded its inland flood model for central Europe to include Poland, and has updated storm surge calculations for Britain.

The Inland Flood Model for Central Europe includes details from river networks extending more than 250,000km and reflects catchments partially or entirely within Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Switzerland.

AIR says coastal flood modelling changes for Britain include updated sea defences such as levees and walls, and their probability of failure.

“With about 10-15% of coastline less than five metres above sea level, the UK is one of the countries in Europe most vulnerable to coastal flooding,” Senior VP of Research Cagdas Kafali said.

The updated coastal storm surge modelling will be included as a sub-peril in the Extratropical Cyclone Model for Europe.
