AIG withholds theft information
Computer equipment containing personal information related to more than 930,000 clients was stolen from a mid-western US office of American International Group last week.
The insurer says information such as names and social security numbers of corporate health insurance clients has not been used – as far as it knows. The information was provided to AIG by 690 insurance brokers seeking quotes for companies nationwide.
AIG reported the break-in on March 31 but has taken two months to evaluate the extent of data lost. Customers have yet to be alerted about the possibility of their information being used by the thieves.
In a move that looks a bit like passing the buck, AIG is blaming brokers for sending the information in the first place, saying it wasn’t necessary for issuing insurance. Brokers have now been barred from divulging such information.
