RAC WA trials app targeting driver phone distraction

RAC WA and data science firm Sentiance have partnered to trial a Safer Driver app in the state in a mission to end mobile phone-related distracted driving.

The app uses behavioural science to change habits and discourage driver phone use, helping motorists understand and proactively reduce the risk of mobile phone distraction.

“We are using evidence-based research to find the best way to help drivers stay focused behind the wheel, and keep everyone safe on WA roads,” Sentiance GM Peter DeLuca said.

The app provides feedback and offers driving challenges, advice, facts and tips, while monitoring and encouraging adaptation of driving behaviour.

Drivers are four times more likely to have a crash that sends them to a hospital if they use their phone while driving, with a two-second glance away from the road at 60kmh resulting in “driving blind” for 33 metres.

WA continues to have one of Australia’s worst road safety records with an RAC WA survey revealing four in five respondents admitted to mobile phone use while in control of a vehicle.
