RAC WA launches safe driving app

RAC WA has made available a new app encouraging drivers to adopt safer attitudes and improve behaviour on the road.

The free RAC Go app was launched on Wednesday and is available Australia-wide. Users do not have to be an RAC member.

An RAC spokesperson tells insuranceNEWS.com.au the insurer plans a wider marketing and advertising campaign next month.

The app "asks motorists to take responsibility for their habits and behaviour behind the wheel,” the RAC spokesperson said, particularly actions related to speed and distraction which "continue to be major contributors to our poor road safety record”.

“As a purpose-led member organisation, RAC’s vision is a safer, sustainable and connected future for all Western Australians.”

The app allows Australians to “measure” their driving. It gives a driving safety score, and if friends and family also download the app, each can see how they “shape up” against others.

“RAC wants to encourage better driving practices so our roads can be safer for everyone. We’d like you to be part of this and an app is one way you can join in,” the insurer said.

"Start a leader board with your nearest and dearest. Take up the challenges in the app as well and have some fun.”

Users will receive tips on how to drive more safely, with better behaviour encouraged via badges, giveaways and positive reinforcement.

“The app will set challenges for you to drive more safely and be more focused. You’ll be rewarded for your safe driving,” RAC said.

The app collects data and gives insight about speed estimations, harsh braking and accelerating, and phone handling, which it uses to calculate driving scores. After every car trip, a score from ‘Poor’ to ‘Excellent’ is generated, as well as an average score for your overall driving.

Both specific trip scores and a user score representing an average of driving behaviour over time are given.

"Just drive as you normally would – don’t use the app while driving. It’s dangerous and you don’t need to for it to work,” RAC said. “At the end of a trip, review your score and gain valuable insights. Join the challenges and read knowledge bites to improve your driving. Get your friends and family to join in and compare scores.”

The RAC Go app will not affect insurance premiums or excess payments.

“This app will challenge you to create safer driving habits and be your best when it comes to driving,” RAC said.
