NSW invests in back-up communications links for disasters

The NSW government has committed $5 million to ensure residents remain connected to internet and telecommunication services during bushfires.

It will invest in new technologies that provide portable connections when regular telecommunications infrastructure is destroyed. These include a ready-to-go deployment of four Cell on Wheels units capable of providing Wi-Fi coverage up to 500 meters on the move. The self-powered units have been provided through a deal with the state’s Telco Authority and communications specialist Pivotel.

The state will also deliver eight portable connection units for community centres, a vehicle that uses Starlink’s satellite technology to deliver broadband connection, and a communications network for emergency services.

“We already have a reliable radio communications system for first responders, but natural disasters can damage this infrastructure,” Customer Service and Digital Government Minister Jihad Dib said.

“Whether it’s flooding, fires or extreme weather events, these solutions can be rapidly deployed to impacted areas, helping communities stay connected and get back on their feet.”

NSW Premier Chris Minns says the new technologies “will help people contact loved ones and stay connected in times of need”.
