IAG Firemark invests in weather-watching start-ups
IAG Firemark Ventures has invested in two insurtechs aiming to build more resilient communities.
Near Space Labs and 7Analytics join 25 portfolio companies collaborating with IAG’s venture capital arm.
“We are thrilled to see what these global leaders in their categories can do for the Australian and New Zealand insurance market in 2025,” IAG Firemark general partner Scott Gunther said. “As the frequency and severity of weather events increase, having access to up-to-date information provides opportunities for insurers to help customers understand their risks.”
US-based Near Space Labs uses stratospheric balloons to capture high-altitude imagery and data insurers can use to help customers identify risk and improve resilience.
It can also aid insurance policy pricing and disaster response.
CEO Rema Matevosyan says IAG Firemark “leads from the front by investing in technology that has the potential to help the insurance market adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change”.
Norway-based 7Analytics uses advanced geoscience and machine learning to develop predictive models for floods and landslides.
It helps property insurers pinpoint risk at the individual asset level.
Co-founder and COO Jonas Aas Torland says his platform “assumes the next big event could happen anywhere”.
The IAG investment will help 7Analytics expand geographically.
