FloodMapp introduces live mapping tool
FloodMapp is rolling out a live mapping feed called NowCast under a new partnership with Esri Australia, a supplier of geographic information system (GIS) software.
Emergency managers can use NowCast to “boost situational awareness” and create a common operating picture during flood.
FloodMapp Co-Founder Juliette Murphy says the interactive map can be “read by anyone from hydraulic engineers to members of the public” during flood events.
"We can provide dynamic, real-time flood forecasting and mapping data feeds at scale to protect critical infrastructure, improve service delivery, and ensure safety is afforded,” she said.
Ms Murphy says current flood forecasting systems and data provided are too broad and are not integrated in realtime with mapping tools. She says FloodMapp incorporates live river-height data and elevation models.
FloodMapp’s DASH technology deploys artificial intelligence, machine learning, hydraulics and algorithms. It uses real-time and forecast rainfall data, coastal and river height data to predict peak river heights and generate inundation mapping over large areas.
Esri Australia Disaster Response Program Manager Mark Wallace says flood data is often fragmented, and government agencies and industry have varying access to studies, which often only show 1-in-100-year flood levels.
