Strong winds, rain and hail trigger claims in eastern states

Storms that have swept through NSW and parts of Queensland have triggered calls for emergency help and some early insurance claims as strong winds and heavy rain hit homes and businesses.

The NSW State Emergency Service said in an afternoon Facebook update that there have been more than 2500 incidents lodged amid the severe weather. It expects more storms today and further rainfall over the next 24 hours in the Mid North Coast and northeast regions of the state.

Most incidents involved fallen trees and powerlines, and damaged properties. More than 143,000 power outages were recorded in 24 hours.

Allianz said it had received more than 80 claims by 10am, with high SES callout numbers typically a good indicator of a surge in property claims.

“We expect more claims from the event and ongoing inclement weather to be lodged over coming days,” a spokesman said.

The SES says a man in his 80s died at Cowra after a tree fell on his vehicle, four people were injured at Bomen on the outskirts of Wagga Wagga when demountable huts flipped in the wind, and falling trees damaged homes and fences.

Gusts of more than 100km/h were recorded at locations including Wagga Wagga, Kurnell in Sydney and Scone in the Upper Hunter region as storms moved across NSW from yesterday afternoon.

In Queensland, giant hailstorms hit around Stanthorpe and other areas endured wild weather.

Suncorp says Maitland and Wagga Wagga in NSW and Stanthorpe in Queensland are among the hardest-hit areas.

“In response to continued weather forecasts, we have implemented support measures and are proactively reaching out to affected customers,” a spokesperson said.

The Bureau of Meteorology said 11-13cm hailstones were seen about midday today south of Grafton and seven-centimetre hailstones were reported near Kyogal in the Northern Rivers region this afternoon.

A warning remains in place for large hailstones, damaging wind and heavy rainfall in parts of the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast and Northern Tablelands districts.
