RAA turns to Duck Creek for tech overhaul

South Australian motoring group RAA’s legacy technology for motor and home insurance products will be replaced with Duck Creek’s OnDemand cloud platform.

The new system will include policy, rating, billing and claims, plus data and insights.

The overhaul comes after Allianz Australia struck a $642 million deal with RAA that includes acquisition of its insurance business and a 20-year distribution agreement in which RAA will be responsible for marketing and distribution of insurance products. Allianz will be responsible for product, pricing, claims and underwriting.

RAA CTO James Galdes says Duck Creek will be the core insurance technology partner for personal and motor covers, bringing greater speed to market for new products and a modern experience for the group’s 825,000 members.

“As SA’s largest personal lines insurer, our members’ needs and expectations are continually evolving, and we require a more flexible, nimble and sustainable insurance delivery platform. We’ve found this with Duck Creek,” he said.

The technology will help to “unlock efficiencies and uplift our staff and members’ experiences now and into the future”, Mr Galdes added.

“Duck Creek ... will help reduce our data centre footprint while improving scalability and availability. It will simplify regulatory compliance thanks to the platform’s security that’s been built for the Australian context.”

Fortnightly “silent” updates will eliminate disruptive upgrades and costly downtime.

“We can focus more on delivering coverage, confidence, value and greater member experiences, and focus less on technology,” Mr Galdes said.

Duck Creek Asia-Pacific MD Christian Erickson says as a member-based organisation, RAA “required more than just protection for policyholders. They pride themselves on delivering value to members. RAA has a big vision and high expectations and will be pushing the boundaries of innovation and possibilities.”

RAA’s tech upgrade comes after consultants Gartner and Deloitte undertook a comprehensive market evaluation.

Mr Galdes said: “Duck Creek’s evergreen architecture, strong partnership ethos, local product support and pre-built marketplace connectors were recognised as distinct advantages.”
