QBE claims teams to harness geospatial tech

QBE will use geospatial technology across its claims handling operations after successful tests of the tool.

The insurer trialled the technology during management of commercial claims from Cyclone Jasper in Queensland late last year. Claims were "triaged” using the tool, minimising the need for hydrology reports and helping to avoid delays.

“In the coming months, our focus will be on transitioning geospatial technology from these large-scale pilots to operational use within our claims, supply chain and catastrophe response teams,” QBE Ventures CEO James Orchard said.

Investment in geospatial data and artificial intelligence platforms could “transform the way we manage residential and commercial property risks and claims at QBE”, he says.

“Geospatial data shows us the precise location of our insured properties. When combined with satellite imagery, our teams can visually assess the impact of severe weather events in near real time in one place.”

QBE says a purpose-built platform was tested during its response to Cyclone Jasper.

It helped reduce the need for physical access to affected areas, which can be hindered by floodwater and debris, and improved the efficiency, speed and accuracy of its claims response.

“In many cases, we eliminated the need for on-site inspections and specialist reports,” local head of property claims Chad Vigar said. “Our claims team was able to monitor the impact of Cyclone Jasper on our insured properties in near real time, enabling them to make quick and informed decisions about what resources, trades and support teams were needed.”

The pilot was one of many geospatial technology trials QBE has run globally. It says the results support further expansion, including in underwriting and risk assessment.

QBE says advanced technology “will be key to supporting customers in their times of need”.

Mr Orchard said: “By leaning into AI, we’ll be able to aggregate and analyse data more effectively and build better, faster response workflows into our risk management and claims platforms.”
