Qantas flies into home insurance market

Qantas Home Insurance, underwritten by Auto & General, was today added to the airline’s stable of cover options, which spans health, travel, life and car insurance.

The airline, which entered the motor market in partnership with the same underwriter just over a year ago, is leveraging the appeal of its frequent flyer rewards program to tap into wider financial services revenue streams.

Qantas also already offers travel insurance, underwritten by Lloyd’s, life policies from TAL and health cover issued by Nib.

Up to 40,000 Qantas Points is on offer for Qantas Frequent Flyer program members who sign up for a Qantas Home Insurance policy by the end of February, as well as one point for every dollar spent on their premium.

“Australians recognise the benefit of earning points on every day expenses but also the peace of mind that comes with purchasing a product from a brand they can trust,” Qantas Loyalty CEO Olivia Wirth said.

Policy holders can also earn additional Qantas Points by using the Qantas Wellbeing App to track household safety tasks like unplugging unused electrical appliances and checking smoke detectors.

Qantas says its insurance has become one of the fastest growing ways for its customers to earn loyalty points.

“The products we’ve launched through Qantas Insurance have seen frequent flyers pocket billions of points,” Ms Wirth says. “It’s an important point of difference for us in the market.”

Qantas Home Insurance includes home, contents, renters’ and landlord insurance.

Auto & General also underwrites policies for other businesses that have expanded into general insurance, including Australia Post, Virgin Money and ING, while its own brands include Budget Direct. The firm is part of the Budget insurance group, which has expanded internationally after starting in South Africa.
