Police officer faces court over alleged insurance fraud

A NSW police officer has been charged with offences related to alleged fraudulent insurance claims after two vehicles were suspiciously destroyed by fire.

The 34-year-old male constable operating in the state’s Southern Region was arrested in Sydney on Monday.

He was charged with dishonestly destroying property by fire/explosive for gain and attempting to dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception.

The officer was also charged with acting with intent to pervert the course of justice and possession of bestiality material.

In April, Strike Force Merthyr was established to investigate after the two vehicles were suspiciously destroyed in the Murray River area.

“Police will allege in court that the officer submitted a false insurance claim for the two vehicles,” a NSW Police statement said. The policeman, whose employment status is "under review,” will appear at Albury Local Court on March 11.

“No further information is available until the matter is in court,” a NSW Police spokeswoman told insuranceNEWS.com.au today.
