Parliamentary floods inquiry sets dates for first hearings
The parliamentary inquiry into insurers’ responses to major flooding in 2022 has scheduled its first round of public hearings, with insurers, consumer groups and regulators set to appear over five days starting next Wednesday.
Consumer and legal aid groups will appear on the first day via video conference, with the opening session to hear from Financial Rights Legal Centre, Choice, Consumer Action Law Centre and Westjustice. The groups provided a joint submission.
They will be followed by the Victorian Council of Social Service, Disaster Legal Help Victoria, Legal Aid NSW and Legal Aid Queensland.
The second day includes Financial Counselling Australia, Restoration Industry Association of Australasia, the Australian Consumers Insurance Lobby and Victorian-based ARC Justice.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority will provide their perspectives to the committee on February 2
Insurers are scheduled from the fourth day of hearings, appearing via videoconference or in person at Parliament House in Canberra.
The Insurance Council of Australia will appear first on February 5, followed by Suncorp, IAG and Youi, while RACQ and Allianz Australia are scheduled for an afternoon session on Friday February 9.
The inquiry was referred to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics last August, with the terms of reference requiring that it examine the response to claims lodged during the major floods of 2022.
Events that year included the record-breaking southeast Queensland northern NSW floods of February and March, Hunter and greater Sydney region flooding in July, the Victorian, NSW and Tasmanian floods in October and the central west NSW floods later in the year.
The committee has received 36 submissions and responses from an online survey, and has previously said that it will visit affected regions as part of its inquiries. A report is due by September 30.
