NZ insurers pay out more than $NZ1 billion for twin climate catastrophes
A third of the claims for two record-breaking New Zealand weather events have so far been paid out from the estimated $NZ3.18 billion($AUD2.9 billion) bill.
Insurers have forked out $NZ1.08 billion ($AUD986 million) for more than 37,000 claims, out of a total of 107,569 claims.
The claims arise from the twin climate disasters of the Anniversary Weekend floods, which started on January 27 and are considered the worst floods in Auckland’s modern history, and Cyclone Gabrielle in February.
"While we are pleased that good progress is being made, with 35% of claims already fully settled, we said in February that many of the more complex, claims would take many months, and some over a year or more, to complete," Insurance Council of New Zealand Te Kāhui Inihua o Aotearoa (ICNZ) CEO Tim Grafton said.
Mr Grafton says insurers are committed to supporting their customers in their recovery, recruiting extra staff to manage claims and working with government, councils, communities, and individuals to help people back on their feet as soon as possible.
"There is much yet to be done. For some customers there is a long road ahead while they work through the categorisation process with their council. Insurers are committed to standing by their customers until all claims are settled," Mr Grafton said.
As insuranceNEWS.com.au has reported, the New Zealand Government has announced a scheme to buy back the most at-risk properties.
Mr Grafton says to put the claims for the Anniversary floods and Cyclone Gabrielle in context, in 2022 the total claims for the general insurance sector were valued at $NZ3.08 billion ($AUD2.81 billion) and for the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake at $NZ2.27 billion ($AUD2.07 billion).
ICNZ says people with residential insurance can understand how their claims are proceeding and get help to minimise disputes through the free and independent New Zealand Claims Resolution Service.
