No rush: insurers start small with office returns
Australia’s major insurers have begun returning to the workplace, but they’re taking it slow and following official guidance every step of the way.
Suncorp, IAG and QBE – which at the height of the coronavirus lockdown had up to 98% of staff working from home – have confirmed to insuranceNEWS.com.au that small numbers of staff have returned to the office.
“We’re not rushing back to our workplaces, and taking a considered approach, starting small and reviewing as we go,” a Suncorp spokesman said.
“A small cohort of our people in business-critical roles are starting to return to the office now, but it isn’t a return to normal.”
Suncorp says it is also implementing new protocols to manage COVID-19 risk, including designated workstations, additional cleaning measures, virtual meetings and swipe-card entry.
“These arrangements will remain in place for some time, until we’re confident the protocols are effective and it’s safe for more people to return,” the spokesman said.
IAG says it has NRMA Insurance branches open in Parramatta, Hurstville and Richmond. IAG’s Research Centre has also opened, but will only be working at two-thirds capacity until restrictions ease
The remainder of its Australia employees will continue to work remotely, and the NRMA Insurance branches will follow safety measures including four square metres per person, customers seen by appointment only, floor markings and sneeze guards, and extra hygiene products and cleaning.
“We are following the advice of government and health authorities to plan a measured return to the workplace, prioritising the safety of our people and support and service to our customers,” an IAG spokesman said.
“Whenever a team returns to their workplace we work hard to ensure we are meeting social distancing and hygiene criteria to keep our people safe.”
QBE says it also has “a small number of staff” back in the office.
“We plan to increase that number slowly over the weeks ahead – in line with government guidelines,” a spokesman said.
