Liberty revamps Asia Pacific team 

Sydney-based Robert Mercer has been promoted to Asia Pacific head of claims at Liberty International Insurance as part of wider leadership changes. 

Several Liberty Specialty Markets team members in Australia also take on new responsibilities, while AIG Pacific CFO Tibor Nagy will move from Sydney to Singapore after joining Liberty International Insurance as Asia Pacific CFO. 

In April, Liberty Mutual unified its Asia Pacific retail and commercial/specialty business operations under the leadership of Matthew Jackson, who is based in Singapore.  

“Over recent months we’ve been setting up our structure for the region,” Mr Jackson said. “We have some terrific talent in our business.” The team oversees brands including Liberty Insurance, Liberty Specialty Markets and Liberty General Insurance. 

In Australia, Melbourne-based underwriting manager Daniel Hingston becomes head of casualty Australia. 

Victorian branch manager Donna Niblock replaces Paul Scales as NSW branch manager and Mr Scales takes the new role of head of client & broking distribution Asia Pacific. 

Sydney-based John Campbell becomes head of casualty Asia Pacific, supporting head of casualty and professional & financial risks Asia Pacific Marcus Thomas, also based in Sydney. 

Brisbane-based head of casualty specialties Asia Pacific Alan Thorn adds life sciences to his existing environmental impairment liability portfolio, while Gavin Goldsbrough becomes head of client engagement Australia. 

In Singapore, Vidhi Kapoor joins as Asia Pacific regional head of HR. She was most recently Singapore Country HR Head at Citibank, where she spent 16 years. David Tam has been promoted to Asia Pacific CIO. 

“We’re pleased to see some of our existing leaders take on expanded remits, and also welcome Vidhi and Tibor who strengthen our executive team,” Mr Jackson said. 

Mr Mercer’s promotion adds responsibility for retail claims to his existing portfolio of commercial and specialty claims.  

He previously took on broader leadership responsibility in mid 2020 when he was promoted to deputy head of claims for Asia Pacific after leading professional and financial lines claims, which he has continued to lead alongside the broader suite of products and services. 

Mr Mercer takes over from Bangkok-based head of claims Asia retail markets Carlos Alberto Martinez who is retiring at the end of next month after 18 years.
