Liberty casualty line pioneer calls time on ‘outstanding’ career

Noel MacCarthy retired last week after 25 years at Liberty Specialty Markets.

Mr MacCarthy, who returned to Australia from the US a year ago as global product leader for casualty at Liberty Mutual Global Risk Solutions, will continue to assist with special projects.

“Over the past 25 years, Noel has made an outstanding and incredibly positive impact on Liberty, primarily in this region and also globally,” Asia-Pacific president Mike Abdallah said.

“He has been an adviser and mentor to many in our casualty team and more broadly across the business. Noel has a tremendous market reputation and is recognised and greatly respected in the industry.

“The Asia-Pacific casualty results over the past 25 years are incredible, and Noel’s leadership contribution is without question.”

Formerly at HIH, Mr MacCarthy joined Liberty in 1999 in Sydney to lead the Asia-Pacific casualty portfolio when it first opened.

“This ability to seize the market opportunity at the right time helped generate significant profits for Asia-Pacific and enabled us to sustain this premier position over many years, providing Liberty Asia-Pacific with a very solid financial foundation to create what we have become today,” Mr Abdallah said.

Mr MacCarthy, originally from Brisbane, moved to Singapore in 2015 and Hong Kong the following year, returning to Australia in 2017 before moving to Boston as Liberty’s global casualty leader in 2022.

“Although the task was complex and difficult, Noel was able to make many inroads and adopt numerous and accelerated corrective actions to improve performance,” Mr Abdallah said, adding he was “extremely grateful” to have worked closely with Mr MacCarthy over many years.

“It has been hugely rewarding and with plenty of laughs and many stories along the way.”
