Foregone conclusion? Meetings held on proposed strata commission ban

NSW Fair Trading has held a series of meetings with consumer and industry groups to consult on a proposed ban of strata insurance commissions.

insuranceNEWS.com.au understands the ban is slated to take effect early next year. It is not clear whether the intention is for it to apply just to strata managers or to insurance brokers as well.

The remuneration of strata insurance intermediaries has been under scrutiny after a series of ABC exposés. The broadcaster revealed concerning conduct at one company, before airing a broader investigation into a range of issues.

NSW legislation has already been passed in response to the concerns, but Labor’s Mark Buttigieg previously said a ban is “absolutely on the table”.

Those who attended the consultations have been asked to keep discussions confidential, but insuranceNEWS.com.au understands the meetings were titled “banning commissions” and that several participants came away with the impression the ban is a “foregone conclusion”.

NSW Fair Trading has confirmed to insuranceNEWS.com.au that consultation is under way and meetings have taken place, but was unable to answer questions by our publication deadline.
