Flood inquiry to visit Tasmania

Federal MPs will hold a hearing in northern Tasmania as they continue their inquiry into the insurance industry’s response to the record floods of 2022.

The House Standing Committee on Economics inquiry will hold the session at Paranaple Convention Centre in Devonport on July 17. Chair Daniel Mulino says he wants to “hear first-hand from local councils, businesses and residents about their experiences”.

Parts of northern Tasmania – alongside areas of Victoria and NSW – were hit by flooding in October 2022. According to the Insurance Council of Australia, the deluge resulted in $884 million of insured losses and nearly 23,000 claims lodged, with almost 95% of claims closed.

The inquiry committee says councils, business groups and community organisations have been invited to the hearing. Individuals are encouraged to make submissions at the event or via the committee’s survey.

The inquiry has visited flood-affected areas across Victoria, NSW and Queensland in previous months. It will also hold hearings in Cairns and Townsville, on July 24 and 25 respectively.

The committee is due to deliver its final report by September 30.
