Building cover tops AFCA insurance complaints
Home building cover was the most complained about insurance product in the second half of last year, Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) data released today shows.
AFCA progressed 1450 home building complaints, representing 7.2% of the total across all financial product groups. Motor insurance complaints were close behind, totalling 1405.
A breakdown by financial firm type shows AFCA received a total of 7114 complaints about general insurers, making the sector the second-most complained about. There were 14,096 complaints about banks, 4643 against credit providers and 2787 about superannuation funds.
The breakdowns are published on the AFCA Datacube which launched last year to detail complaints received, how they have been resolved and naming financial firms involved.
The information aims to assist consumers and boost transparency following the Hayne royal commission.
“Rebuilding trust in the Australian financial services will be a long journey and one that requires effort across the entire sector,” AFCA COO Justin Untersteiner said today.
“Transparency is key in this transformation and we have made significant changes in the way we report our data and decisions to make them more accessible to the public.”
Suncorp’s AAI was involved in 1680 complaints in the six months to December 31, with 641 resolved by the insurer when referred back. There were 1491 complaints concerning IAG’s Insurance Australia, with 802 resolved on referral back.
The two groups are Australia’s largest personal lines insurers.
AFCA received 584 complaints about QBE, 576 about Allianz Australia and 328 about Commonwealth Insurance.
In the broking area, 23 complaints were received about small firm Risk Insure, with 19 of those resolved at referral back to the firm.
For broking firms ranging in size from medium to very large, there were 12 complaints against Gallagher, 11 against Aon Risk Services, eight against Jardine Lloyd Thompson and seven against each of Community Broker Network, Coverforce and NLC Insurance.
