Bakery owner faces arson, fraud charges after fire claim

Police in WA have charged a 50-year-old woman over allegations she set fire to her bakery to obtain an insurance payout.  

The premises in Spencer Park, Albany, sustained roof and structural damage estimated to cost $955,000 on the afternoon of October 12.

Detectives allege the owner deliberately lit the fire and lodged an insurance claim to cover the damage. Her policy also covered up to $500,000 for contents damage and $2.2 million for business interruption. 

The owner has been charged with criminal damage by fire and attempted gain of benefit by fraud. She is due to appear before Albany Magistrates’ Court on December 12.
