Agile hires group risk officer

Agile Underwriting Services says Matthew Rowan has joined as group risk and compliance officer.

Mr Rowan, who is based in Sydney, started this month, according to his LinkedIn.

His appointment follows the establishment of Agile’s Lloyd’s syndicate 2427, which commenced operations in May. The syndicate is focused on accident and health, aviation, casualty, construction, financial lines and property business in the Australian and New Zealand markets.

Mr Rowan will oversee both the syndicate service company and managing general agency operations. He will also be responsible for the claims handling units and working with broking partners.

Mr Rowan was most recently Aon’s Australian division chief compliance officer. Before Aon, he was interim compliance head with AUB and he has also worked as conduct head at Steadfast.

He also has Lloyd’s syndicate experience, having worked for Argenta Syndicate Management in London for 10 years, according to his LinkedIn. He was group chief risk officer and compliance director with the Lloyd’s managing agent before relocating back to Sydney in 2020.

“We’ve known Matt for a long time, and his experience is a rare mix of London market and Australian experience that matches the Agile Group perfectly,” Agile Group CEO Robin Barham said. “The retail expertise he brings from managing conduct and compliance at Australia’s largest broking groups – Steadfast, AUB and Aon – is ideally suited to our portfolio mix focused on Australian SMEs.”

Agile underwriting head Mark Hunt says Mr Rowan’s knowledge of Lloyd’s requirements from his time as its senior risk executive from 2005 to 2010 will be a “great support” as the agency continues to work on growing syndicate 2427’s business.
