ACT Liberals promise strata commissioner
The ACT Liberal opposition says it will establish a strata and building quality commissioner if it wins government in next month’s election.
The commissioner would provide a single point of contact for people facing challenges in strata living and would “champion commonsense change” within government, opposition leader Elizabeth Lee says.
Reforms could include legislative changes to improve how strata corporations work or how they interact with the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal, and changes to the design of government programs to ensure they are accessible and useful to owners and tenants.
“A commissioner will be an agent for change and will play a significant role in determining practical steps that we can take to address the growing concerns within our strata community, as well as improving building quality in Canberra,” Ms Lee said.
Liberal sustainable building and construction spokesman Mark Parton says priorities include supporting the take-up of shared energy infrastructure such as rooftop solar and electric vehicle charging.
The ACT election will be held on October 19. Labor’s Andrew Barr has been Chief Minister since 2014 and he heads a Labor-Greens government.
