Suncorp pays claims by card
Suncorp has begun to issue claims payments in the form of prepaid Visa cards, giving policyholders fast access to emergency funds in times of disaster.
Called “Claim and Swipe”, the program – which Suncorp is claiming as a “first” – has been introduced in areas of Queensland, NSW and Victoria affected by recent floods. It will be used by many personal lines brands including AAMI, GIO and Apia.
The company says the cards will be used to obtain emergency assistance such as food, clothing or shelter, and can be issued on the spot by its mobile claims offices that can be at the scene of a disaster within 24 hours.
EGM Personal Insurance Claims Jason McCracken says the need for the cards was identified following last year’s Queensland floods and Cyclone Yasi, when thousands of customers required emergency funds to purchase basic essentials.
“In the wake of a disaster, our first priority is making sure our customers can access food, shelter and other essential items,” he said. “These cards are the fastest and simplest way for customers to access much-needed funds.
“It also means that money is flowing into local businesses at a time when they need it most.”
The company also plans to issue the cards as claims payment for routine home contents claims, enabling policyholders “the freedom and flexibility to choose their retailer and shop locally or online”, Mr McCracken said.
