SCTI introduces working overseas policy

Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI) has announced the launch of a new policy for Australians who intend to live and work abroad, as it aims to “acknowledge the needs of travellers”.

SCTI says the policy will be eligible for office-based workers and some manual workers in providing benefits tailored for long-term living overseas, with cover for optical and emergency dental treatment, mental health care, rehabilitation and occupational treatment, and maternity care, all featured.

The policy also provides travellers coverage for select holidays away from their primary destination, with an additional premium potentially added depending on the location.

SCTI says each Working Overseas policy can be purchased to cover 12 months, with renewals available until 60 months of coverage.

The travel insurer says the policy addresses the changing demands of consumers who are open to the possibility of working overseas in the future.

“There is most certainly demand which is evidenced by our Future of Travel 2023 research,” SCTI CEO Jo McCauley said.

“This showed 73% of GenZ and 70% of Millennials would consider living and working overseas for a period of time to extend a trip or holiday.”

But Ms McCauley says it’s important for Australians who intend to travel for an extended period to ensure they are financially protected against hefty fees.

“When you’re living somewhere for a long period of time, the likelihood of needing medical assistance is increased and it’s important not to assume you can access the local health system for free – this isn’t always the case and, in some instances, it can lead to expensive medical bills,” she said.
