QBE partners with climate risk predictor

QBE has announced a partnership with Jupiter, a US-based leader in predicting and managing climate risk.

The insurer is also investing in the company, marking the fourth move by $50 million insurtech fund QBE Ventures.

Jupiter’s cloud-based ClimateScore platform incorporates environmental factors to deliver “risk-focused solutions”, analysing and predicting risk from one hour to 50 years ahead.

“The risks related to severe weather and climate change are some of the greatest challenges faced by the insurance industry,” QBE Group COO David McMillan said. “Through our partnership with Jupiter we will incorporate leading-edge data analytics to improve underwriting and pricing and provide resiliency management expertise for our customers.”

Jupiter already predicts the probability of extreme weather in select North American cities, and is expanding to service global markets.
