The Territory Insurance Office (TIO) has opened a new branch in Darwin six months after a disgruntled claimant firebombed a city outlet injuring more than a dozen people.

TIO opened the doors to its new branch in the Mitchell Centre last week, two blocks away from its previous outlet in Cavanagh Street.

A TIO spokesman says the decision to move away from Cavanagh Street follows “continual reviews” to evaluate the best available sites.

“Centre management at the Mitchell Centre provides excellent security features for the entire building, including our new branch,” she told insuranceNEWS.com.au.

The man charged with the arson attack, known only as Bird, remains in custody in Darwin ahead of a scheduled court appearance next month.
