New QBE parental leave plan aims for gender equality
QBE has introduced a new paid parental arrangement that eliminates the use of gendered carer labels.
The “Share the Care” initiative was announced on Friday to coincide with International Women’s Day, which this year carried the theme #balanceforbetter.
Under the arrangement, QBE’s existing 12-week paid parental leave will be available to every new parent.
Less than 5% of male employees elect to take primary carers leave in Australia, leaving women to assume a bigger responsibility and in the process, risk suffering the so-called “motherhood penalty” of lower salaries.
“Sharing the role of caregiver is fundamental to achieving gender equality by mainstreaming career breaks and flexible working for both men and women,” QBE’s Chief Human Resources Officer Eleanor Debelle said.
“We’re committed to recognising the moments that matter to our employees, and becoming a parent is a pivotal moment, no matter the gender.”
