Medibank to insure furry friends
Health insurer Medibank Private is moving into the pet insurance market.
The company says vet bills can cost as much as human medical treatment.
Research by the health insurance fund shows while 63% of Australian households have a pet, only 1% have pet insurance despite the massive costs if they were to get sick.
Medibank Pet Insurance will cover vet bills for cats and dogs with a choice of accidents, illness, injury and disease plus routine benefits, with monthly premiums from $12.50 for cats and $14.05 for dogs.
General Manager Business Relationships Norm Cockerell says being prepared can save thousands of dollars and unnecessary emotional distress.
“No pet owner wants to be in the situation where they need to choose between the life of their pet and what they can afford,” he said.
