DLA Piper launches in Australia while NZ goes its own way
The local merger of law firms DLA Phillips Fox (Australia) and US-based global operator DLA Piper has been completed, with the re-branded DLA Piper now trading in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Perth.
But in New Zealand, DLA Phillips Fox continues to trade as an independent firm after the NZ arm opted not to financially integrate with DLA Piper.
The company has offices in Auckland and Wellington, and will retain close links with DLA Piper by keeping its status in the DLA Piper global network.
Speaking from London, DLA Piper Co-CEO Sir Nigel Knowles said the firm’s initial priority is full financial integration of the Australian business, “given Australia’s G20 status”.
“The move also ensured a much closer relationship between New Zealand and the whole of DLA Piper. We will continue to share systems, training and knowhow with DLA New Zealand to enhance service to clients.”
The Australian merger gives DLA Piper 11 offices throughout Asia-Pacific, with more than 700 lawyers. Globally its operations span 4200 lawyers operating out of 76 offices in 30 countries.
