Calliden and QBE pick up NSW builders’ warranty

Calliden’s future in the builders’ warranty insurance market appears assured after being appointed to a new state-operated scheme in NSW alongside QBE.

In step with Victoria, NSW is moving to a state-underwritten scheme following the departure from the privatised market of major insurers Vero, CGU and Lumley Insurance.

On Thursday the NSW Government announced QBE and Calliden will act as insurance agents under the new state builders’ warranty insurance scheme, which begins on July 1 under the management of the NSW Self Insurance Corporation.

The NSW arrangement follows an earlier commitment between the WA Government and Calliden and QBE to provide cover.

There has been increased speculation about Calliden’s ongoing commitment to the builders’ warranty insurance market after it was left out of a Victorian supply arrangement between QBE and the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority.

But a Calliden spokesman told insuranceNEWS.com.au on Thursday the company will this week issue a statement “covering its position on residential builders warranty insurance nationally”.

That announcement is expected to detail Calliden’s approach to areas outside NSW and WA, including Victoria.
