… with job cuts on the cards at Suncorp

Insurance staff at Suncorp aren’t expected to be affected by the announcement to cut an unspecified number of jobs at the Brisbane-based bancassurer.

CEO John Mulcahy said last week a number of back-office staff may be affected by plans to merge Suncorp’s retail and business bank divisions.

But he told a company profit announcement last week that Suncorp will look to “use the turnover figures and redeployment wherever we can to minimise the head count impact”.

A spokesman told insuranceNEWS.com.au the decision won’t affect existing insurance staff, but didn’t rule out the possibility of job cuts within the insurance division should profit continue to decline.

“We don’t have a planned program of job cuts in place. We are, however, operating in a difficult economic environment and can’t rule out job cuts in the future should conditions continue to deteriorate.”
