Insurers recognised for workplace gender equality drives

Allianz, AMP, Genworth, Suncorp and TAL are cited as Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) “employers of choice for gender equality” this year.

The five insurers, which were also on last year’s list, are among 106 employers recognised for their commitment to promote gender equality in the workplace.

“We have worked hard to establish well-designed programs that support diversity and inclusion… The business case for diversity has never been more compelling,” Allianz MD Niran Peiris said.

“It brings together diversity of thought, experience and approaches to business issues.

“It is in this environment that we will see innovation flourish, engagement levels increase and a sharpened approach to attracting and retaining talent.”

WGEA Director Libby Lyons says the increase in citation-holders from 90 last year shows more companies “recognise that equal participation by women and men at all levels of an organisation is good for workplace culture and performance”.

She says this year’s recipients share common traits, including flexibility for all staff company-wide, programs to support women in leadership and technical roles, and supporting men’s caring responsibilities.

“WGEA data shows there is progress towards gender equality in Australian workplaces, but it is too slow,” Ms Lyons said. “It is only through more employers taking the initiative to promote gender equality in the workplace that we will see the pace of change pick up.”
