Bhatia starts new role with NSW insurance scheme

Former Lumley General Insurance CEO Vivek Bhatia has been named CEO of Insurance & Care NSW (icare) – the State Government’s leading insurance scheme under workers’ compensation reforms that take effect tomorrow.

The new entity will deliver services to clients of WorkCover NSW, the Lifetime Care & Support Authority, the Dust Diseases Authority and the NSW Self Insurance Corporation.

It takes over most functions from the Safe Return to Work and Support Division (SRWSD), where Mr Bhatia was appointed CEO in August last year.

icare will manage $30 billion in assets and $26 billion in liabilities, making it the largest general insurance service provider in Australia.

It will report to Finance, Services and Property Minister Dominic Perrottet.

“The NSW Government’s workers’ compensation reforms will result in a new order,” Mr Perrottet said.

“This will enable us to deliver a fairer, more sustainable compensation scheme with a focus on the injured person, not the process.”

SRWSD Chairman Michael Carapiet and Customer Service Commissioner Michael Pratt have been appointed Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the icare board.

Other board members will be appointed, the NSW Government says.

The reforms are part of the State Insurance and Care Governance Act 2015, which creates three organisations – icare, the State Insurance Regulatory Authority and SafeWork NSW.

The regulatory authority is part of the new Better Regulation Division in the Department of Finance and Services, and reports to Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello.
