ASIC ramps up corporate governance messages

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has made its public messages on corporate governance more easily accessible as part of its overall goal to encourage good company practices.

“Good corporate governance is the foundation upon which investor trust and confidence in companies is built,” Commissioner John Price said. “It is only through good governance that fair, orderly, transparent and efficient markets can be achieved.”

The regulator has set up a new webpage to centralise the corporate watchdog’s published messages on corporate governance.

The site provides links to various related topics including managing conflicts, shareholder engagement, culture, executive remuneration, emerging risk management and directors as gatekeepers.

Other sources of regulatory and best practice guidance are also available including links to the ASX, Governance Institute of Australia, Financial Services Council and Australian Institute of Company Directors.

“ASIC regularly engages with stakeholders on corporate governance-related issues through articles in external publications, speeches at events and the publications of reports, regulatory guides and information sheets,” it says.

“We use these opportunities to inform interested individuals about issues of current concern to ASIC and provide guidance to assist these individuals and companies to comply with their obligations.”
