Japan quake claim payouts hit $3.9 billion

Insurance claim payments following an earthquake in Japan earlier this year have reached ¥301.9 billion ($3.9 billion), according to industry figures.

The General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ) says 190,311 payouts have been made against quake cover on homes, with 210,500 cases settled at June 13.

Some 231,187 enquiries were received after the quake in the Kumamoto Prefecture on April 16. The magnitude-7 quake followed a magnitude-6.2 event two days earlier, with scores of lives lost and thousands of buildings damaged.

The GIAJ figures, gathered from domestic and foreign insurers, show the Kumamoto region on Kyushu, one of Japan’s four largest islands, accounted for about 95% of claims paid.

Most of the remainder were from Oita and Fukuoka prefectures.
