QBE has raised $US600 million ($650 million) by issuing 64 million shares to institutional investors.

The insurer announced earlier in the month it will issue shares to institutions and raise $US150 million ($160 million) through a share purchase plan for other investors.

The funds will enable QBE to reduce its debt and increase its capital strength.
