Greens use FOI to reveal Sydney cladding risk

Hundreds of buildings in the City of Sydney area are at risk due to flammable cladding, the NSW Greens say.

Documents obtained by the party through freedom of information laws shows prominent buildings such as Broadway, the Strand Arcade, Galleries Shopping Centre and the Queen Victoria Building are exposed. Some 18 buildings at the University of Sydney feature flammable cladding, including a childcare centre, student housing and lecture theatres.

More than 340 properties are at risk overall, the Greens say.

“Councils are in an impossible position, being given lists with dozens or hundreds of at-risk properties with no details about the nature of the risk and no resources to undertake the analysis themselves,” Greens MP David Shoebridge said.

“This is a ticking time-bomb for councils and property owners alike.”

Owners should be required to properly assess and address the risk, or councils should be given fresh powers and resources, he says.
